I’m Pregnant. Who Needs to Know?

You just found out you’re pregnant.

If you come from a family, culture, or faith community with strong expectations around marriage, sex, or timing, the idea of saying the words “I’m pregnant” out loud can feel terrifying. You might be picturing disappointed faces, hard conversations, or fear being cut off from the people you love most.

Take a moment right now to breathe in—hold it—and exhale. Fear and anxiety have a way of making you feel completely alone, but you’re not. Women come through the doors of Two Lines Pregnancy Clinic every day with concerns and doubts about their ability to care for a child, the complexity of their living situations and relationship statuses, what their family and social circles will think, and what to do next. At Two Lines, they find support, hope, and a pathway forward.

You can too.

It’s entirely your decision when and how you share your news, but we do encourage you to seek support. No woman should ever face an unexpected pregnancy alone, and isolation doesn’t make room for thinking through a better plan—rather it tends to create space for fear to grow bigger.

Who to Tell

Partner

There’s no single “right” answer to who should know that you’re pregnant, but often, a partner is the first person that comes to mind.

Sharing the news with your partner can feel like the natural next step, but it’s okay if it also feels vulnerable, especially if the pregnancy was unexpected. News of an unplanned pregnancy can bring a wave of emotions when you both begin to consider a future that may look different than you anticipated. The realization that another person may soon become part of your lives can prompt questions about your relationship, future plans, and what comes next. Even a partner who deeply cares for you may need a moment to process the unexpected news. It’s helpful to remember that an initial reaction is not always a reflection of how your partner will feel after they’ve had time to process.

That said, we know relationships aren’t always safe. If your partner has ever been abusive, controlling, or frightening, please don’t feel obligated to tell your partner first—or at all, until you have a safety plan in place. The same is true if home isn’t a safe place because of family conflict or abuse. If this describes your situation, the National Domestic Violence Hotline (1-800-799-7233) is available 24/7, and they can help you think through next steps safely.

Parents

For many women, parents are simultaneously the hardest and most important people to tell. Parents hold a unique position of influence in their children’s lives from birth, heightening the emotional stakes surrounding such a significant announcement, especially in families where premarital pregnancy carries deep cultural or religious weight.

While it may be daunting to think about, parents are worth considering on your list of individuals to tell. On one hand, their close relationship with you puts them in a position to be able to offer experienced guidance, support, and reassurance that encourages and empowers you as you navigate this unexpected part of your life. At the same time, their personal beliefs, hopes, or expectations for your future may impact their response. Reflect on your relationship with them and evaluate the ways they have consistently supported you or responded during difficult times. This can help you decide when, how, and whether you want to share your pregnancy with them.

Their response may not be entirely predictable, but making a plan for how you want to approach the conversation will help you feel grounded and more in control. You decide when you feel ready to share with your parents and how, but know that you don’t have to figure it out alone. At Two Lines Pregnancy Clinic, we help women talk through how to tell their parents about their unplanned pregnancy. We help think through a plan, talk about possible reactions, and prepare for different outcomes.

A Trusted Friend

If you’re not ready to tell your partner or your parents, consider whether there’s someone else you trust. Is there a close friend who has stood by you through difficult moments? A sister who knows you well? A loving grandparent, aunt, coach, teacher, or mentor who has consistently made you feel safe and cared for?

You don’t need to tell everyone. You just need one or two trustworthy people who will listen without rushing to judge or pressure you. As you think about who to tell, look for someone whose character has earned your trust over time. Choose someone who will protect your story, respect your privacy, and help you take your next step with wisdom and care.

If you’re reading this and realizing you can’t think of a single person who feels safe to tell—please know this: that’s exactly why Two Lines Pregnancy Clinic exists. Many women come to us with little or no support system at all. You don’t need to have someone lined up before you reach out to us for help. Call or chat with us online today.

Healthcare Providers

Regardless of who you choose to tell, connecting with a healthcare provider is important for your health and your pregnancy. It is good to speak with a medical professional who understands pregnancy and can provide you with clear information about what’s actually happening in your body. If you do not have a primary care provider or regular obstetrician-gynecologist and aren’t sure where to begin, Two Lines Pregnancy Clinic may be a good place to start.
